Friday, October 10, 2008: Robert Thomas, Clayton, and I worked on logging out blowdowns on the Rocky Flats Trail this past Friday. We left a truck on Citico Road at the old footbridge location, and then drove around to the Doublecamp Creek trailhead to start work. We sawed more that a dozen trees off the trail, and cleared about 3 ¼ miles of the trail to a spot along Abby Branch. We have about 1 ¼ miles of the trail left to clear on some future work trip. We had to spend an hour sawing one large tree, swapping out people on the 2 person crosscut saw. The good news is that most of the dead pines are down now, so we won’t have to clear over a hundred trees again until the hemlocks start to fall.
Here is our time for the trip:

Thursday, April 22, 2010: Rocky Flats Trail - We were able to complete logging out the Rocky Flats Trail yesterday, though it took longer than anticipated. We did not get to the tree on South Fork or to the tree on Bear Branch. There are several places where Rocky Flats needs treadwork, and one place where a rootball has taken out the trail altogether. We cut at least 30 trees, including several with complicated cuts. The hours are as follows:
Bill Hodge - 8.5 hrs, plus 1 hr travel
Tazz Reid - 8.5 hrs, plus 1 hr travel
John Kalabus - 8.5 hrs, plus 2 hrs. travel
Thursday, Februaary 2, 2012 - Rocky Flats Trail - After hearning that the trail had lots of blowdowns by a hiking group, we decided to tacktle this trail today. Six of us with crosscut saws and other hand tools went from the trailhead up Doublecamp Creek Road down to Warden Fields, a distance of 4.3 miles by my GPS. We logged out about 3 miles of the trail of numerous large and small trees. Most we were able to get with a one-man cross cut, but a few required the two-man saw. This trail has quite a bit of uphill climbing, so we were all quite tired by the time we reached our cars. We will probably go back next week to finish off the trail. We also need to go in with plastic ribbon to mark the trail in a very obscure section about a half mile past the old stone chimney. We had to spend quite a bit of time figuring out where the trail goes. We hear the hiking group last weekend had the same problem. We may eventually need to put up some wood trail signs at this location.

Tuesday, Feb 7, 2012 - Rocky Flats Trail - Rick Harris went out to flag with yellow plastic flagging and clear the trail corridor where people have been losing their way. The section was about a quarter mile long, just past the second crossing over Rocky Flats Branch as the trail climbs the hillside. He went past the area to a section where the trail was obvious then worked his way back toward the creek crossing. In addition to putting up the yellow flagging, he also cleared lots of briars and fallen branches and a few small trees. The route is now clear and easy to follow.
