Monthly Club Meeting
Thursday, September 10, 2009

 

The club voted to hold the next meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sugarloaf Picnic Area in Ocoee.  Bring a covered dish item and a lawn chair.  The club will provide ice, plates, drinks, and eating utensils.   Sugarloaf Park is located on Hwy 64 near the Hwy 64 and Hwy 314 junction.  The park is on the right just prior to Ocoee #1.  If you are traveling west on Hwy 64, the park is on the left just past the dam.  If it is raining at picnic time, the alternate location will be at Pat and Leon Bates home.

Sugarloaf Park

The monthly meeting of the Cherokee Hiking Club was held on September 10, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Sugarloaf Park.  Eighteen members and three guests attended.  Following a delicious potluck meal, President Randy Morris called the business meeting to order at 7:22 p.m.  Minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Jane Bohannon and were approved as read.  Treasurer Ann Gray reported a current balance of $1087.07. 

Old business:  A followup was mentioned on getting the CSCC trail blazed.

New business:  A committee will be selected at the next meeting to nominate club officers for the upcoming year 2010. 

Rick Harris discussed the BMTA Annual Meeting which will be held at the Coker Creek Village on November 6-8,2009.  Some hikes scheduled on those days are on the Unicoi Turnpike, Warriors Passage, Coker Creek Falls Trail, and the Unicoi Gap to Hwy 68.  The meeting and hikes will be open to anyone whether you are a BMTA member or not.  There will be a club display set up at the Autumn Gold Festival at Coker Creek.  Our club trifold will be displayed there. 

Hikes completed:  Randy reported on the Smokies high altitude Hike. Joanne Jackson  reported on the Hooper Bald and Huckleberry Knob hike led by Bob and Effaleda Lee.  Trail maintenance  reports were given by Rick Harris and Clayton Pannell. 

Upcoming hikes:  The September 20 Hiwassee canoe trip will be led by Clayton Pannell.  The LenFoote overnight hike will be led by Gary Harwell September  19-20.  Jane and Sheila Bailey will co-lead the Blood Mountain Trail September 12.  On September 19 Ruth Gafford from the Hiwassee Club will lead the power house section of the John Muir Trail.   Debbie Flower and Randy Morris will lead the Fiery Gizzard trail October 3.  Rick Harris will lead the Hangover Lead Trail October 10.   

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

Next meeting:  The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. October 8 at the Baptist Student Center  Building on the CSCC Campus at 1475 Norman Chapel Rd. N.W.  Bring a covered dish item as usual.  The November meeting will be at Michael’s Restaurant in Etowah.  The December 10 meeting will be at Antonio’s Restaurant in Cleveland.
