Big Frog
Mountain Nighthike
Saturday, September
29, 2012
Brief Description: As the days grow shorter and the evenings cooler, we are planning a moonlight hike up Big Frog Mountain on Saturday September 29th. We plan to hike up Big Frog late in the afternoon just in time for sunset, and then hike down by the light of the moon. It would probably be a good idea to pack a sandwich, or at least a snack to munch on, as we watch the sun go down and the full moon rise. The Big Frog hike is about 11 miles roundtrip and is considered strenuous due to the elevation change. Although the moon will be full, hikers will need a good headlamp to use on the way down. The sights and sounds of the night make it an interesting experience. If the weather were to be uncooperative, we might change this to a day hike or cancel it altogether.
Length: 11 miles
Difficulty Rating: Strenuous
Elevation Gain: ~2500 feet
Hike Leader: James Anderson. If you would like to go, please call James Anderson at 423-715-8824 no later than Friday noon on September 28th. Although we have tentative plans to begin our hike around 4:00 p.m., we will specify the exact meeting times and places depending on those who are planning to go
Post Trip Report: Besides the hike leader James Anderson, Randy Morris and Buddy Arnold did the moonlight hike on Big Frog. Although there were still clouds at the top we were able to see the moon on the way down. We left the parking lot at the trail head around 4:00 p.m. that afternoon and were back at the vehicle by about 10:00 p.m. The going was slow as this trail has washed out in some areas and is in need of brushing out and restoration of the pathway in places.
