South Hiking Trail
Saturday, April 9,
2011
Brief Description: This is an easy 5.6 mile hike in the newly opened Enterprise South Nature Park adjacent to the Volkswagen Plant just off I-75 east of Chattanooga at exit 7. Besides the hiking trail network, there are about 10 miles of mountain biking trails and plans are to put in horse trails as well. This park is managed by the Hamilton County Park System. This property used to be the Volunteer Munitions Plant where most of the gunpowder for WWII was produced and stored. The property is riddled with old bunkers for storing explosives. Don't worry, they have all been emptied out and some are open to the public.
Directions: Carpool from the commuter parking lot at Exit 25 at 8:30 AM or meet at the trail parking lot across the road from the Enterprise South Visitor Center at 9AM. Take I-75 toward Chattanooga and take Exit 7, go north toward the Volkswagen plant, then right into the park just before reaching the plant.
Length: 5.6 mile loop trail
Difficulty Rating: easy with only minimal elevation gain
Elevation Gain: minimal

Post-Trip Report: Five hikers and Percy hiked the new trail system at Enterprise South. Under threatening skies, we followed the well planned route mapped by Rick Harris. Thanks Rick. The trails are well marked, wide, and covered with a thick layer of wood chips (Note: there are extra roads not marked on the map). We saw wild flowers, old bunkers, and evidence of wild pigs in the area. The day turned out very nice and we hiked 5.6 miles through this very nice trail system.
