Mountain Bluff Trail Dayhike
Sunday, October 24, 2010
Hike Leader: Gail Gray 423 336-1070
Hike Rating: moderate
Hike Distance: 4.5 miles, pets not suggested due to sheer bluffs and lots of stairs
Hike Description: This 4.5-mile trail is very scenic, and the leaves should be reaching their peak about this time. The hike itself is mostly downhill and easy until the very end when we will reach the stairs ascending up to Point Park, which makes the rating of moderate seem most accurate. These are metal stairs, and there are a lot of them. This makes it a great hike for humans, but not pets. There are also a few spots where we would not want an animal running by and tipping anyone over the edge. This trail is a “must do” for those who have not been on it previously. You can be in two states on one trail, from Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
Directions: We will meet on 25th Street, west of the interstate overpass at the Commuters’ Lot, past the Shell Service Station at 1:00 p.m. We will carpool to Lookout Mountain and shuttle from Point Park to the trailhead behind Covenant College. The drive from Point Park to the trailhead is beautiful with many large estates in evidence along the way.
Post Trip Report: There could never have been a more perfect day for hiking. Four enthusiastic hikers followed their puny, ailing leader down the mountain from the trailhead at Covenant College to the hundreds (maybe a few less) of steel steps up to Point Park. Jean Smith, Debbie Zuidema, Kenneth Johnson and Edmond and Gail Gray (leader) thoroughly enjoyed the day and the company of the other hikers. Jean is a relatively new hiker and prospective member of our group. We all agreed that she added a lot of class to our motley crew. The entire day was wonderful, and the group most compatible. It turned into a super fun day for all.
