Mini-Tour-de-Cohutta Dayhike
Saturday, March 14, 2009
Brief Description:
May this turn into a fine spring day for a long hike around the Cohuttas. Two options are being considered, each with two river crossings (nearly impossible to avoid in this wilderness area). One will take us up Chestnut Mt. on the renamed Hemp Top Trail, across Big Frog and continuing to Penitentiary Branch, descending to Jacks River to the falls, and out via the Beech Bottom Trail after a short backtrack. Total distance: 18 miles (with a short car shuttle).
The second possibility is from Rice Camp up East Cowpen Trail to Panther Creek Trail and return via Conasauga River and Hickory Creek Trails, about 16 miles. A possible out-and-back excursion to Cowpen Mountain, the highest point in the wilderness, could add 2 miles, if folks would like. Good weather is essential for this hike, which is rated 'extremely strenuous'. Great views will reward. Please call for meeting times/places: Bill and Diana Ristom, 423-476-2945.Length: 16-18 miles
Difficulty Rating: Extremely Strenouous
Elevation Gain: More than you can imagine, not for the weak in heart or body
Hike Leader: Bill and Diana Ristom, 423-476-2945
