Indian
Flats Falls Dayhike
Tremont Area of the Great Smoky Mountains
Saturday, December 13, 2008
Brief Description: We will go to Indian Flats Falls—a 7.5 mile moderate hike—in the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This trail follows the Lynn Camp Prong of the Little River for much of the way and sports some nice small waterfalls and rapids just a few tenths of a mile into the hike as well as the beautiful and unusual Indian Flats Falls where we will eat lunch. There is about 1,200 feet of elevation gain, but it is very moderate as it follows an old rail bed for much of the hike. Please be aware that much of this trail is maintained as a horse trail so it can be muddy if there has been a recent rain in the area.
Leader: Randy Morris, 423-338-9464
Difficulty: moderate due to the elevation gain and length
Elevation Gain: 1200 feet in the first 4 miles
Length: about 7.5 miles
Directions to the Trailhead: We will meet at the commuter parking lot off of Exit 25 in Cleveland at 8:00 a.m. for the approximate 2 hour trip to Tremont. If participants are interested we may also have an early dinner on the way home after the hike. If interested in attending, please call Randy by Friday evening, December 12 at 338-9464 or tell him at the hiking club Christmas Party on Friday the 12th.
Post Trip Report: On a crisp, but beautiful morning three hikers made the trek to the Tremont area of the Smokies for the 7.5 mile roundtrip hike to Indian Flats Falls. The weather could not have cooperated more as approximately 5 inches of rain a few days prior made the Lynn Camp Prong of the Little River a thunderous and beautiful gushing stream while a 2 inch snowfall made the area a “winter wonderland”. We were literally amazed with the beauty we beheld. The waterfall was likewise at its best. Enjoying the day were hikers James Anderson, Kathy Seymour and hike leader Randy Morris.
