Bartram Trail Dayhike
Friday-Sunday, August 8-10, 2008 (Hike on Saturday)
 

Brief Description:   The section of the trail we will be hiking is section 5.  It is 7.5 miles, rated moderate due to the length. It is downhill most of the way except for a 350' climb up Jarrett Bald. The last 2.5 miles to the lake are a little steep.

Camping and Travel to the Area: Camping at the Apple Tree Campground in the Nantahala National Forest on Friday night. We have secured a group site which will accommodate 10+ tents for $50.00 a night.

Length 7.5 miles

Difficulty Rating: Moderate

Elevation Gain: Mostly downhill, only about 350 feet of climbing

Directions to the Trailhead Meet at the Guhne’s house at 3:00 on Friday afternoon to caravan to the campground for camping Friday night. We will stop in Murphy to eat at a favorite restaurant called Doyle’s.  Campers will need to bring lunch for the hike on Sat. w/ breakfast at a local restaurant being investigated. There are shower and toilet facilities at the campground. After the Saturday hike we will head home. The drive is about 2 1/2 hours home. For those who want to leave earlier, please contact Carroll regarding our reservation. Directions to the campground are as follows: Travel HW 64 to Murphy, HW 19 to Andrews, Business 19 through Andrews, take a right on Junaluska Road for +/- 12 miles; Apple Tree Camp Ground is on the left.  You MUST call the Guhnes no later than AUG 6 if you are planning to hike, camp or both.

Basically we will be going downhill most of the time except for a 350' climb up Jarrett Bald. The last 2.5 miles to the lake are a little steep 'but nothing we haven't done in our hiking around here.
